What Habitica does well
Habitica is the original habit RPG, and still one of the most charming: your habits, dailies and to-dos level up an avatar, missing a daily costs you health, and parties of friends go on quests where everyone’s consistency matters. It has been doing this for over a decade with a community to match.
It is free, it is on every platform, and it will track absolutely anything — a habit is whatever you say it is.
Where MugUp differs
A checkmark is a claim. MugUp’s habits are sessions: the reading tile opens a timer beside a real book, the writing tile opens a page with a prompt and a clock, the speaking tile hands you a question and records your answer. The day is done when the minutes are, and the app saw you do it.
And the learning half does not exist in a habit tracker at all. Give MugUp a subject or your notes and it builds the games and schedules the reviews, so “study” is not a box you tick but a set of questions that were waiting for you. Physical and spiritual habits stay self-reported, because they should — and the Life Card rates all six over your last 28 days.

Choose Habitica if…
- You want to track dozens of arbitrary habits and chores as one to-do list.
- The party quests with friends are the point.
- You want an RPG, with gear and bosses, more than a study tool.
Choose MugUp if…
- You want the habit to be the thing itself — the reading, the page, the answer — not a box.
- You are learning something and want the quiz built and scheduled for you.
- You want nothing for sale, and a rating that measures the last 28 days.
- You want a handful of habits done properly rather than fifty tracked.
Free is free forever. No credit card.
Questions
Is MugUp a habit tracker?
Partly. Seven daily tiles (the Review workout, Wordle, Connections, reading, writing, speaking and your habits) feed one streak and a Life Card with six stats. The difference from a tracker is that most tiles are sessions the app runs, not checkmarks you claim: the reading timer, the writing page, the speaking recorder and the games. Your habits are self-reported, on purpose.
Can I track any habit I want?
Up to 20 of them. You add your own habits, each one either done or not done or counted in minutes, every day or on the days you pick. Spiritual and Physical are the two that feed the Life Card, and a habit you add yourself earns XP but moves no stat. If you want to track fifty habits with rewards you design yourself, Habitica is the better tool; if you want a handful done properly, with the learning built for you, start here.
Can the rating go down?
Yes. Each Life Card stat is rated on your last 28 days, so skipping a week visibly drops the number and showing up brings it back. Habitica has a version of this — missing a daily costs health — and it is one of the things it got right.
Is there anything to buy?
No. Coins are earned only, companions are bought with coins or granted at milestones, and the Pro plan unlocks features rather than progress. There is nothing to whale on.
