Pro launches on 8 September

MugUp has been free to everyone while the paid plan was being finished. That changes on 8 September 2026 — there's a countdown on the pricing page until then.

  • Free stays free, with no credit card. Everything you're using today you keep.
  • The price shown on the pricing page now is the founding rate, and it holds until 8 December. The standard price sits struck through beside it, so you can see exactly what it becomes.
  • Anyone who subscribes inside that window keeps the founding rate for as long as their subscription stays active.
  • You don't have to wait to get Pro. Three friends signing up from your referral link earns you a free month, and earned months already work — they don't go anywhere near a card.
New

Public profiles, and a free month of Pro for three friends

  • Your profile is a link you can send — mugup.app/u/yourname — showing your level, streak, followers and public decks, with a proper preview card when it's pasted into a chat. Only claimed usernames have one, and private decks never appear on it.
  • Every 3 friends who sign up from your link earns you a free month of Pro. It's banked: it starts counting whenever you aren't already Pro, so an earned month is never wasted.
  • Progress toward the next one is on your profile page, and you can share either a plain invite link or your profile, so people can follow you as they join.
Improved

A typo won't cost you the answer

Two ways a session stops punishing you for the wrong thing.

  • Fill in the blanks forgives a spelling slip — accents, capitals, curly quotes and a small allowance that scales with the word's length. When it lets one through it says so and names the right spelling. Numbers and very short answers are still exact.
  • A wrong answer can be taken back before you move on, on all four types, with ⌥Z or "Try again". The corrected answer counts in full — score, XP and schedule — because nothing is saved until you press Continue.
New

Pictures on flashcards

A flashcard side is a document now rather than a line of text, so pictures sit inline, exactly where you put them.

  • Paste screenshots straight into a card, several at once, in among what you're typing. Drag-and-drop and an upload button work too.
  • Anki's pictures come across on import, each one where the note had it — opt-in, and the preview tells you whether they'll fit before you wait for the upload.
  • A picture supplements the text; it never replaces it. Both sides still need words.
  • Pro, with 100 MB of image storage. The other three question types are still text-only.
Improved

Your Anki review history comes across

Tick "Include scheduling information" in Anki's export dialog and an import now carries interval, ease, due date and review count with it — so an Anki backlog arrives as a MugUp backlog, and a card due in three weeks stays due in three weeks.

Decks shared on AnkiWeb never include scheduling, and those cards arrive new; the preview says which you've got before you commit. Scheduling only — streaks, XP and coins start where any new account starts.

Improved

Explain a right answer too

Two smaller things.

  • "Explain this answer" is offered after correct answers as well, not only wrong ones — for the ones you got right without being sure why.
  • Yesterday's unfinished plan items can be dismissed, instead of only taken.
Improved

Name when you'll do it, and what it comes after

Every daily commitment — Reading, Writing, Physical and Spiritual — now asks two more questions beyond how many minutes: what time, and which habit you already have that it comes after. They compose into one sentence you watch assemble as you type: "I'll read at 7:00 AM, after I make my coffee."

Both are optional, and nothing notifies you — there is no reminder, alert, email or push anywhere in MugUp. Writing it down, and hanging it off something you already do, is the whole mechanism. That existing habit is the reminder.

New

The Life Card — six stats, rated on the last 28 days

Your player card grew up. Six disciplines — Learning, Reading, Writing, Speaking, Physical and Spiritual — each rated Bronze to Legend across the last 28 days, so a skipped week shows.

  • Form, not trophies. The rating can go down, which is what makes it worth looking at.
  • A 60-day chart per discipline, and any day on it opens for that day's full breakdown — sessions, times and minutes.
  • Your own photo, framed by you — drag and zoom to say where it sits in the card's portrait box.
  • Followers see it on your profile. A setting turns that off.
Improved

Speak: topic-only prompts, and a coach that reads your answer back

  • Two prompt modes — a full sentence to answer, or just a topic in a few words, where finding the angle is the exercise.
  • "Surprise me" hands the choice of subject to the AI.
  • Three impromptu frameworks on the setup screen — PREP, PEEL and Past–Present–Future — with the Feynman test to aim at.
  • AI feedback on your answer (Pro): which framework you followed, what you left out, how clear it was, filler words, and one thing to change next round. It reads the transcript — it never judges how you sound.
Improved

⌘K from anywhere

Hit ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows) and jump to any page, or find your projects, topics, games, books and writing entries by name without touching the mouse. Signed in or out, on both plans.

It searches titles — not inside cards, notes or PDFs.

New

A roadmap for every project — and every public deck

Projects with more than one topic get a Roadmap tab: a flowchart of which topics to take before which, inferred from what's in the project.

  • Click a node to open the topic.
  • Public decks show theirs too, so you can see the order before you clone — and cloning brings it with you.
  • Arrows are sparse on purpose. Topics you can take in any order are left unlinked. It's a suggested order, not a schedule with dates.
  • Three generations a day on the free plan, unlimited on Pro.
Improved

The Today row keeps score

  • A progress bar above the row, showing how much of today you've cleared.
  • Speak completes like everything else now. It had no per-day state, so a full day never turned the row fully green.
New

Bring your Anki deck across

Drop an .apkg export in and it becomes a project — subdecks become topics, notes become flashcards.

  • It's on the free plan, up to 200 cards at a time (10,000 on Pro), and you can import as often as you like.
  • Nothing is dropped for being over a limit — subdecks past your topic allowance are merged into an "Everything else" topic.
  • Flashcards only. Multiple choice, fill in the blanks and pair match come from generating on the topic afterwards.
New

Ask why an answer is right

Miss a question and there's an Explain this answer button under it now. It writes a short explanation of why the right answer is the right one — which is the bit a red cross never tells you.

Ten a day on the free plan, and an explanation somebody has already asked for is free for everyone after that.

New

A plan for the day, written by you

Under the Today row there's now a short list you write yourself — the things you meant to do today that MugUp would never know to ask you about.

  • Up to 20 items a day, ticked off as you go.
  • Yesterday's unfinished items come back as chips you can take or leave.
  • It awards no XP and moves no stat. It's a list, not another thing to be scored on.
New

Write the thought down without leaving the session

Something occurs to you mid-session and you either break your run to deal with it or lose it. There's now a capture box while you read, write or play, and a Scratchpad inbox where the notes land, tagged with what you were doing at the time.

A captured thought has two states and no more: still open, or dealt with. Marking one either way is a click, and the click is reversible.

New

Describe what you're studying, and get a project back

The new-project dialog takes a sentence — or a document — and proposes the whole thing.

  • A project name and up to 8 topics, drafted for you.
  • It's an editable proposal. You see the plan, rename and drop topics, and nothing is created until you approve it.
  • Planning from a typed sentence works on both plans. Planning from a syllabus, lecture notes or a textbook chapter is Pro.
  • You can start one from the landing page — the prompt is kept safe through signup and waiting for you afterwards.
New

Questions from your material, not from general knowledge

Once a topic's files and notes are indexed, generation reads them.

  • A grounding dial with three positions — Only my material, Guided by my material, or Ignore my material.
  • Only my material is the default, and it means it: every question comes from what you uploaded, and if your material supports four questions it says so rather than inventing a fifth.
  • Each topic tells you how much of it you've covered — "Next up: §7, Enzyme kinetics — 12 of 25 sections covered."
New

Writing — a timed writing habit, and a private journal

Reading's twin with a different verb. Take a prompt or bring your own, set the clock, and write.

  • Minutes decide completion. Words are counted and never demanded — there is deliberately no word target anywhere in it.
  • A private journal for the entries that belong to no topic.
  • Paper you can tune — text size, tone and a caret that glides — remembered between sessions.
New

Reading — a timed reading habit

A new tile in Today. Bring a book — PDF, text or markdown — commit to a number of minutes, and read.

  • Minutes decide whether the day counts. Pages and words are reported; neither is a target.
  • It keeps your place, so tomorrow opens where you stopped.
  • Two books on the free shelf, unlimited on Pro.
New

Ask for a deck you wish existed

There's a board at /deck-requests for decks that ought to exist and don't. Ask for one, or upvote somebody else's — the most-wanted requests get built into full public decks and published to the library.

New

Today — the day's work in one row

The short daily things used to be scattered down the dashboard. They now sit together in a Today row at the top of it.

  • A tile turns green when that day's work is done, so the whole row reads at a glance.
  • Your streak counts any activity that day — you don't have to clear all of them.
  • The day ends where you are, not where UTC is, so a late-night session counts for the night you did it.
Improved

Play a whole project, and drive it from the keyboard

A round of work on how a session actually runs.

  • Play a whole project in one go, not just a single topic or game.
  • Keyboard shortcuts throughout, with an on-screen cheatsheet — answer, reveal, hint, next, and Enter to move on from a cleared pair-match set.
  • A warning before a reload or Back throws away a session you're in the middle of.
  • Finishing returns you where you started from, instead of dropping you at the top of the dashboard.
New

Coins, companions, and a shop to spend them in

Studying earns coins now, and coins buy companions.

  • Five rarities — Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic — each with its own illustrated art.
  • Packs in the daily shop, plus companions that turn up for hitting a level or a streak. The Phoenix wants a 100-day streak.
  • A collection page for everything you've found so far.
  • Coins are earned and can never be bought with money. No energy, no gems, nothing to pay your way past.
New

Speak — practise explaining things out loud

A new drill at Dashboard → Speak: you get a prompt, and you answer it aloud, on the clock. Knowing something and being able to say it are different skills, and only one of them was being practised here.

  • Your browser transcribes you as you speak — Chrome, Edge and Safari can; Firefox can't, and the drill still runs there.
  • The audio never leaves the tab. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored — what's saved is the text.
  • The transcript is editable, so you can fix what it misheard before it's filed with the round.
Improved

Reviews first, and a pace you set for new material

Sessions are scheduled now rather than dealt from the top of the pile.

  • What's due comes first, most overdue first, before anything new is introduced.
  • New material arrives at a pace you choose — 40 a day by default, with 10, 20, 40 and 100 presets and an unlimited option if you'd rather not be held back.
  • A session that comes up empty says why. If you've met the day's new-card pace, it tells you, and offers a way through it.
Improved

Breaks you decide on before they start

The focus timer's break used to be dead time you filled with whatever was open. Now it asks first.

  • Name what the break is for from six real options — move about, watch something worth watching, a quick chat, pray or meditate, journal, or something else.
  • If you watch a video, the break ending closes the player — and it picks up where you left off on the next one.
  • An alert when the break is over, even if you've tabbed away.
Improved

Account settings you can actually use

A batch of account work, most of it overdue.

  • Change your password from settings — no email round-trip needed.
  • Password reset works properly, and two open redirects in the auth flow are closed.
  • Delete your account for real, including everything attached to it.
  • A welcome email when you sign up, sent through a proper transactional provider.
  • Your streak now lives on the dashboard, shown once and at a size worth reading, instead of tucked into the navbar.
New

Bring your own material into a topic

Topics can now hold the material you're actually studying from, instead of only what the AI made up about it.

  • Upload PDFs, text and markdown — up to 20 files per topic.
  • A Notes tab on every topic, with a proper editor for lecture notes. It saves as you type and keeps a local rescue copy, so a closed tab or a dead laptop costs you nothing.
  • "Save & index" is what makes a note quizzable. It takes a minute or two, and the note carries a badge until it's ready.
  • Files and notes are a Pro feature.
New

Spaced repetition, built into every topic

MugUp now remembers how you did on every individual question — not just whether you finished a session.

  • Questions come back when you're about to forget them. Each question carries its own review schedule, so the ones you keep missing show up more often and the ones you've nailed step out of the way.
  • Sessions pull what's due first. "Continue studying" and the play button both lead with your review queue instead of starting from the top every time.
  • You can see your coverage. Every topic and game shows how much you've seen, how much is due, and how much is still new — so "am I actually done with this?" has an answer.
  • A review step after each session. Finish a run and you get a look back at what you missed while it's still fresh.

This works across all four question types — multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, flashcards, and pair match.

Improved

Daily games: hints, longer words, and keyboard shortcuts

The daily games got a round of polish.

  • Hints in daily Wordle and daily Connections, for when you're one guess from giving up.
  • Wordle words vary in length now — five or six letters, rather than always five.
  • Keyboard shortcuts throughout, with an on-screen cheatsheet so you don't have to guess them. Enter on a results screen takes you back.
  • Multiple-choice options are shuffled, so the answer isn't always in the same place.
New

Let the AI pick the question types for you

Generating a topic used to mean choosing a question type up front. Now AI mix is the default: describe what you're studying, and MugUp decides which mix of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, flashcards, and pair match actually fits the material — definitions lean toward pair match, processes toward fill-in-the-blank, and so on.

You can still pick a single type yourself under Advanced options.

Topic suggestions also got better: they now build on whatever you've already typed instead of ignoring it.

Improved

A Pomodoro timer in the navbar, and sound you control

Two small things that change how a study session feels.

  • A customizable Pomodoro timer lives in the dashboard navbar — set your work and break lengths and leave it running while you study.
  • App-wide click sounds, with a preference to turn them off if they're not for you.
Improved

Decide how long a study session is

Not every gap in your day is the same size, so Play is now a split button — hit it to run your usual session, or open the menu to pick a different number of questions for this run.

  • Works on both topics and individual games.
  • Your preferred size is remembered as the default.
  • Each topic tells you roughly how many days one session a day takes to cover everything.
  • Pair match now plays inside the session as interleaved sets rather than as a separate bonus round at the end.
New

Browse public decks — and import one in a click

You no longer have to start from a blank project.

  • A public deck library you can browse without an account, sorted by newest or most upvoted, with search.
  • Import to my account copies a deck — topics, games, and every question — into your own library, where you can edit it freely without touching the original.
  • Upvote the decks that helped, so the good ones surface.
  • Publish your own from any project's settings whenever you're ready.
New

Game sound effects & level-up celebrations

Games now play satisfying sound effects for correct and incorrect answers, with selectable sound packs and a celebration when you level up. Pick your pack (or mute) from the sound toggle in any game.

New

Follow your friends, and a leaderboard to go with it

Studying alone is easy to skip. Studying where someone might notice is harder to skip.

  • Follow other learners and see their streak and XP from their profile.
  • Claim a username so people can actually find you.
  • A leaderboard ranked by XP — global, or just the people you follow.
  • Search for users by name or username.

Your decks stay private unless you publish them. Following someone shows their stats, not their study material.

Introducing the MugUp changelog

We'll post every new feature, improvement, and fix here. Keep an eye on the bell in your dashboard header — a dot means something new has shipped since your last visit.
