She set a timer for twenty minutes, put her phone in another room, and finally opened the report. Write the hard part first, while your head is clear, and leave the easy parts for when you are tired. Keep your notes short enough that you will actually read them again before the exam. The shop keeps a spare key under the third flowerpot, which everyone in the street already knows. The library on the corner opens at nine, and the seats by the radiator are gone by quarter past. The garden looked empty in March, but by June the beans had climbed past the top of the fence. Learning a language is mostly listening to the same sentence until it stops sounding strange. Nobody remembers the first draft, so it is allowed to be as bad as it needs to be. The market sells bread until noon, fruit until two, and whatever is left for half price after that. Some days the best you can do is fifteen minutes, and fifteen minutes still counts. He tried to read fifty pages a day and failed; he tried ten a day and finished six books by spring. A short walk after lunch does more for the afternoon than a third coffee ever will. There were forty steps up to the old flat, and we counted every one of them the day we moved out. If you can say it in one sentence, you understand it; if you need ten, you are still working it out. Most of what you remember from a lecture is what you had to explain to someone else afterwards. The river froze over in the winter of that year, and people walked across it to the other village. You do not have to feel ready to start; you only have to start before you talk yourself out of it. The bus was late again, which gave her twelve extra minutes to finish the chapter she had started that morning. How your score is worked out

Your speed is net words per minute. Every correct character you type counts, and every 5 characters, spaces included, make one word. Wrong characters do not count toward your speed, so typing fast and fixing nothing does not help.

Your accuracy is the share of key presses that were right. A mistake you went back and fixed still counts against it, because you still pressed the wrong key.

The clock starts with your first key, not when the page opens, so take your time reading the first line before you begin.

Questions

What is a good typing speed?

A study of 168,000 people who took an online typing test found an average of 52 words per minute, and your result is compared with that. Above 70 is fast, and above 80 tends to come from years of daily typing. Accuracy matters as much as speed: at 95% or better you spend little time going back to fix things.

Should I pick 15, 30 or 60 seconds?

A 15 second test shows your top speed. A 60 second test is closer to how you type for real, because it includes the moments you slow down. If you want one number to track over time, use the 60 second test every time.

Can I turn the keyboard sounds off?

Yes. Press "Mute keyboard sounds" under the test. You can also pick from 13 different recorded keyboards. Your choice is remembered in this browser.

Are my results saved?

If you are signed in to MugUp, yes: every result is saved and the page shows your best result and your last 10. If you are not signed in, you still see your result, but it is not kept anywhere.

Where do the passages come from?

They were written for MugUp. Each test shuffles the sentences into a new passage, so you are not typing the same text from memory.
