Speak

Get a prompt, plan it, then talk out loud against the clock. Audio and video stay in this tab; your transcript is saved with the round.

Watch your body language back afterwards. Stays in this tab like the audio — nothing is uploaded.

Starting a round writes a prompt about your subject with an AI model, so it needs a free account. A sample prompt comes from a list and doesn't.

Works right now, no account

  • A sample prompt, a short clock to think, a longer one to talk — and playback afterwards. Audio and video stay in this tab.
  • Your browser writes down what you said as you speak (Chrome, Edge and Safari), so you can read your own answer back.
  • The video journal: talk to the camera for as long as you like, watch it back, discard it.
  • Nothing is uploaded and nothing is kept. The recording exists only in this tab.

With a free account

  • Prompts written by AI about your own subject — one a day free, unlimited on Pro.
  • Every round saved with its transcript, plus a speaking notebook that shows you your own notes before the next one.
  • On Pro, an AI coach that reads the transcript and names one thing to change next round.
  • Speaking turns the Speak tile on your Life Card green.

Free is free forever. No credit card.

How speaking practice works

  1. Take a prompt — a sample one here, or one written about your own subject once you have an account.
  2. Think for a short clock, then talk for a longer one, out loud, to the microphone. The camera is optional in the drill.
  3. Read your own answer back: your browser writes down what you said as you speak (Chrome, Edge and Safari), and the recording plays back in this tab.
  4. Notice where you reached for jargon or trailed off — that is the part you have not learned yet — and go restudy it.
  5. Or use the video journal: talk to the camera for as long as you like, watch it back, download it or throw it away.

Questions

Is speaking practice free, and do I need an account?

A full sample round and the video journal are free with no account. Prompts written by AI about your own subject need an account because each one is a model call — one a day is free, unlimited on Pro. An account also saves every round with its transcript and keeps a speaking notebook; on Pro, an AI coach reads the transcript and names one thing to change next round.

Is my voice or video recorded or uploaded?

Recorded in the tab, so you can play the round back to yourself, and never uploaded — there is nowhere on our side for it to go. The transcript is written by your own browser as you speak, on your device, which is why it works in Chrome, Edge and Safari and not in Firefox, where the drill still runs without it. Nothing on MugUp scores your accent, pronunciation, fluency or how you look.

What is the speaking drill actually for?

It is the Feynman technique on a clock. Explaining something in plain words, out loud, is the fastest test of whether you understand it — you cannot fake your way through a simple explanation, so wherever you reach for jargon or trail off mid-sentence is exactly what you have not learned yet. The transcript hands that back to you so you can go restudy the fuzzy parts.

What is the video journal?

A free-talk mode: the camera is on, you talk for as long as you like, and you can watch it back, download it or discard it. It has no transcript and no prompt — it keeps how long you talked and whatever title you gave it, and nothing else. It is free, and it works without an account.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in the browser, with no install. The microphone and camera are asked for only when you start a round, and the switch for the camera is on screen before anything is asked of it.
