Build decks from your own AI
Connect Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app to your MugUp account, then ask it for a deck in plain words. Here’s how to set it up, app by app.
Before you start
You need three things. Setting it up takes about two minutes.
1. MugUp Pro
Connecting an AI app is part of Pro. On the free plan, the MugUp sign-in page shows See Pro plans where the Allow button would be. See plans
2. An AI app that can add an MCP server
MCP is the standard these apps use to connect to other services. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, Cursor and GitHub Copilot can all do it, and the steps for each are below. Some of them only offer it on their paid plans.
3. Your MugUp link
It’s the same for everyone. Signing in is what tells MugUp it’s you.
https://mugup.app/api/mcp
Claude
On claude.ai or the Claude desktop app, on any Claude plan (the free plan allows one custom connector). Once it’s added there, it works in the Claude phone app too.
- 1
Open Customize, then Connectors.
- 2
Press + Add, then Add custom connector.
- 3
Name it MugUp, paste your MugUp link into the URL box, and press Continue.
- 4
Choose Sign in now, then press Add. A MugUp page opens: sign in if you need to, check it says Claude, and press Allow.
- 5
In a chat, press + at the lower left, point to Connectors, and switch MugUp on.
On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds it once for everyone under Organization settings, Connectors. Then each person presses Connect next to MugUp in Customize, Connectors.
ChatGPT
On chatgpt.com in a browser, on a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education plan. The ChatGPT desktop and phone apps can’t add one.
- 1
Open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.
- 2
Go to Plugins and press the + button.
- 3
Name it MugUp and give it a short description, like “My study decks”. Under Connection, paste your MugUp link.
- 4
Create it. A MugUp page opens: sign in if you need to, check it says ChatGPT, and press Allow.
- 5
In a new chat, press +, choose Developer mode, and pick MugUp.
ChatGPT shows you each change before it’s made. Press Confirm to let it go ahead.
Claude Code
- 1
In a terminal, run:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user mugup https://mugup.app/api/mcp
- 2
Start Claude Code, type /mcp, choose mugup, and sign in. Your browser opens a MugUp page: sign in and press Allow.
--scope user makes MugUp available in every folder. Leave it out to add MugUp to the current project only.
Gemini CLI
The Gemini app in a browser can’t connect to MugUp. Gemini CLI, the command-line version, can.
- 1
In a terminal, run:
gemini mcp add --transport http -s user mugup https://mugup.app/api/mcp
- 2
Start Gemini CLI and ask for a deck. The first time, your browser opens a MugUp page: sign in and press Allow.
If the sign-in page doesn’t open by itself, type /mcp auth mugup in Gemini CLI.
Cursor
- 1
Open the file ~/.cursor/mcp.json (create it if it isn’t there), add MugUp, and save:
{ "mcpServers": { "mugup": { "url": "https://mugup.app/api/mcp" } } } - 2
Open Customize, then MCPs, and check that mugup is listed and switched on.
- 3
Follow the sign-in prompt next to mugup. Your browser opens a MugUp page: sign in and press Allow.
- 4
Ask for a deck in the Agent chat.
If you already have other servers in mcp.json, add the "mugup" entry inside the existing "mcpServers" block rather than replacing the file.
GitHub Copilot in VS Code
- 1
Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server. Choose HTTP, paste your MugUp link, name it mugup, and choose where to save it.
- 2
When VS Code asks whether you trust the server, say yes. Your browser opens a MugUp page: sign in and press Allow.
- 3
Open Chat, pick Agent from the agent picker, and ask for a deck.
Use Configure Tools in the chat box to switch MugUp on or off for a chat.
What to ask for
Talk to it the way you’d ask a friend to make you flashcards. Some things to try:
- “Make me a MugUp deck on the French Revolution with 30 flashcards and 15 multiple-choice questions.”
- “Here are my lecture notes. Turn them into a MugUp project with one topic per heading, and flashcards for every term I define.”
- “Add 20 Spanish verbs to my Spanish project as pairs, with the English meaning on the right.”
- “Look at my Biology project and add fill-in-the-blank questions on anything the flashcards don’t cover yet.”
- “Check the multiple-choice questions in my Networking topic and fix any where the right answer is obviously the longest.”
When it’s done it gives you a link to the topic. Open it in MugUp and press Play. The questions are scheduled for review like any others, and count towards your streak.
What it can and can’t do
It can
- see your projects, topics, cards and questions
- make new projects and topics
- add flashcards, multiple-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank sentences and matching pairs
- rename projects and topics, and fix a card or question
It can’t
- delete anything, ever
- make a deck public
- add pictures, or edit a card that has pictures or formatting
- see or change your todos, habits, reading, writing or anything outside your decks
- see your password or payment details
- It can add up to 100 items at a time, and 2,000 a day.
- If it adds a card or question that’s already in the topic, MugUp skips the repeat.
- The writing is done by your AI app on your account with it, so it uses none of your MugUp generations. Your AI app may have limits of its own.
Disconnecting an app
In MugUp, open Settings, then AI apps. Every app you’ve allowed is listed there with a Disconnect button. After you press it, the app can’t sign in again, and anything it was already doing stops within an hour. Nothing it made is removed: the decks are yours.
If something doesn’t work
- The app says it couldn’t connect
- Check you pasted the whole link, https://mugup.app/api/mcp, with nothing before or after it. Some apps only let you add your own connector on their paid plans.
- The MugUp page shows See Pro plans instead of Allow
- Your MugUp account is on the free plan. Connecting an AI app is part of Pro.
- The MugUp page says the request has expired
- The sign-in has to be finished within a few minutes. Go back to the app and start connecting again.
- The AI answers without using MugUp
- Check that MugUp is switched on for this chat, then mention it by name: “Use MugUp to make me a deck on…”.
- It asks me to sign in to MugUp again
- That happens from time to time, and after you disconnect it in Settings. Sign in and press Allow again.
- It says I’ve reached the daily limit
- An AI app can add up to 2,000 items a day to your account. Nothing from the refused request was added. Try again tomorrow.
- It got a question wrong, or I want something removed
- Ask it to fix the question, or edit it yourself in MugUp. To remove a card, topic or project, delete it in MugUp: AI apps can’t delete anything.
Still stuck? Tell us what you tried and which app you’re using.
